What's not to like, really? WAVES is not some big beauracratic organization with a ton of overhead and no real clear process. The mission we are all gathering for seems simple. Basic. Proactive. It makes community part of the process of surfing. Creates a connection between the individual and the land they are on, enriching the content of daily life. Thats makes sense to me.
My photography is similar. It's about the process of being engaged with the surroundings. Physical. Exploring. Learning. Working. Visually capturing certain content that vibes with me on a basic and vital level, and in a way that tells or creates a story. Unite that with other people's creative minds to make something bigger, continuous, and beyond and that's what's it's about. You tell me this aligns with WAVES for a greater good? No doubt. I'm there. Plus music, beer, and interesting people?... On it.Featured Nonprofit: Waves of Health
Waves of Health is a nonprofit 501 (c) (3) organization dedicated to helping bring modern medical care to developing communities. Waves of Health has been active in the Dominican Republic for a number of years.
They will have a Benefit Dinner in East Hanover on Feb 25th, so if you miss Jeremy, Umberto, and Gabriel on Tues, you can learn more then...

Founders Dr. Everline and Dr. Boni have been to various developing countries in search of waves, and knew first hand that many communities lacked modern medical care. Their interest in giving back to these communities was part of the inspiration for waves of health. Several projects are keeping the ‘Waves” in Waves of Health.

This is an epic collection of work of some of the best surfing photographers from a period of time that shaped the sport as we know it today. In 2007 I attended a flea market in Los Angeles and discovered several boxes containing 30,000 black & white negatives. After spending over a year organizing this amazing collection, my journey began. I set out to find the photographers as well as the surfers that were captured in these special photographs. I spent 3 years researching and interviewing legends like Aaron Chang, Dan Merkel aka “Man Mountain”, & Bob Barbour. After hearing their stories, I realized that there was something much bigger that needed to be told. Some people say that I didn’t find it. But that it found me.This is Lost & Found

What attracts you to the Rising Tide... Surf Causes Event?
ML: Despite the obvious reasons for philanthropy, I like the idea of contributing to these surf related charities because it offers us a unique opportunity to give something back to the peoples and communities of discreet corners of the world that we would otherwise only associate as remote surfing destinations or obscure 3rd world countries. As globetrotting modernized surfers, we have turned surfing into a quick hit-and-run operation that optimizes quality time in the water and minimizes time spent waiting for swell and actually getting to know a place, the people, and the cultures. This is not some giant nonprofit with lots of overhead where you can contribute and not see results, WAVES for Development specifically aids in community and infrastructure building in Lobitos Peru. These are small and otherwise not well traveled destinations, so for surfers to stop and take the time to help locals progress and learn new trades makes a significant difference for them, year round and for a lifetime. If I can do something as minimal as contribute artwork for auction that helps this effort, then I'm honored to participate.
